What to Bring to the Hospital

What should you pack for labor? Below are some suggestions for things you’ll need during your hospital stay.

In the last trimester of your pregnancy, start making a list and gathering the things you will need to take with you to the hospital. It's a good idea to pack two separate bags - one for labor and delivery and another for your after-delivery stay. We recommend having your bag packed by 34 weeks. Here are some suggestions of things you may want nearby during delivery of your baby and during your hospital stay afterward:

What to Bring in Your Labor & Delivery Bag:

  • Photo ID (driver's license or passport) of both mother and father
  • Hospital forms
  • Birth plan, if you have created one
  • Health insurance card
  • Phone numbers for family and friends
  • Note paper and pen
  • Cell phone and charger
  • Two tennis balls in a tube sock to use as a counter-pressure back support
  • Camera and charger
  • Bathrobe, warm socks and slippers
    • 2-3 pair of non-skid socks or slippers
  • Eye glasses or contact lenses, case and solution
  • Lip balm
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Nutritious snacks for your coach
  • Mildly scented or unscented massage oil or lotion
  • Hair band or ribbon (headband or ponytail holder)
  • A limited amount of money for parking, meals and snacks
  • A focal point to aid in concentration during labor (photo or artwork with special meaning)
  • A baby book for your newborn’s footprints (some dads like the footprints on a T-shirt)
  • Camera or video recorder with film and batteries
  • A hand fan
  • Music
  • Light reading, DVDs, a deck of cards or other forms of entertainment
  • Sanitary pads, if certain brand preferred
  • Breastfeeding pillow (like Boppy, My Breast Friend and others)
  • Comfortable pillow and blanket (2 sets; one for support person if they are spending the night)
  • Breast pump and supplies

What to Bring for Your After Delivery Hospital Stay

Pack a second suitcase for your hospital stay and leave it in the car until after the birth. Please do not bring jewelry, excessive cash, credit cards or other valuables to the hospital.

For You

  • 2-3 Nursing bras and breast pads (strongly advise no underwire)
  • 2-3 pair of maternity underwear (disposable supplied at the hospital)
  • Nightgown or pajamas
  • Comb, brush and hair dryer
  • Shampoo and deodorant
  • Cosmetics
  • Comfortable clothes and shoes to wear home
  • A change of clothes for your partner
For your baby
  • A T-shirt and outfit to wear home, with socks or booties
  • Two light baby blankets
  • A warm baby blanket if the temperature outside is cool (note: hospital only provides blankets during the baby’s stay)
  • An infant car seat (review your owner’s manuals for the car seat and your automobile to make sure the seat is properly installed)
