Antepartum Care

Expectant mothers not quite ready to deliver require extra TLC to ensure the safe and timely births of their babies. Depending on the due date, some mothers will go directly to our labor and delivery unit, but some may need to stay in our Antepartum Unit, a 19-bed, full-service department with a 24-7, in-house, on-call obstetrician.

Whether mothers-to-be require two days or 12 weeks of antepartum care, we accept pregnancies as early as 20 weeks for complications including, but not limited to:

  • pre-term labor
  • pregnancy-induced hypertension
  • diabetes
  • premature rupture of membranes
  • bleeding disorders such as placenta previa or placental abruption
  • asthma
  • post-surgery complications from procedures necessary during pregnancy that may require monitoring of mother and baby post-operation

Delivering High Standards of Care

Memorial Hermann can accommodate most requests, large or small. Whether it's a new or pre-existing condition, we offer a full range of assessments to monitor mom's wellbeing and baby's vital signs, including non-stress tests, biophysical profiles and amniocentesis.

The patient-to-nurse ratio in our Antepartum Unit is at least 3:1, sometimes 2:1 depending on the nature of the pregnancy complication. During the day, nurses go on rounds hourly. At night, it's every two hours, but we assure round-the-clock care by having our nursing staff carry phones should a patient need to contact them. This is in addition to our bedside-call system. We understand that sometimes patients need a great night's sleep, yet they can still rest easy knowing assistance is just a call away.

Delivering Top-Quality Solutions for High-Risk Situations

The reasons mothers seek care at our Antepartum Unit vary, but one thing is certain – they all require monitoring for contractions and fetal heart rate. At Memorial Hermann, these tests are done in the comfort of the patient's own room.

Our interdisciplinary approach ensures high-risk patients receive the best medical care possible. Specialists are available to consult on a wide range of secondary-medical needs, including dieticians, social workers, cardiologists, pulmonologists – whatever the patient's primary-care physician recommends, we provide.
